Countdown to the 2027 Sundance Film Festival

Hey downtown!
The Sundance Film Festival has spent more than four decades in Park City, Utah. This January, that changes, and as I finish my senior year of college, I’ll get to experience the Festival’s first year right here in Boulder. I've heard the buzz about the Festival for years, but I never imagined I’d get to experience it in a place I call home.
Interning with Downtown Boulder Partnership has only made me more excited for its arrival, especially with some of our downtown venues participating - like the Boulder Theater, eTown Hall, and the Canyon Theater - Boulder Public Library, among others around town. Watching spots I walk past every day get transformed into venues for the 2027 Sundance Film Festival has made the excitement around it feel a lot more real.
With CU Boulder gearing up for the Festival and Downtown Boulder Partnership preparing to welcome visitors, I've had a front-row seat to watch that excitement build across the community. Seeing it all take shape firsthand has given me a new appreciation for just how much planning, coordination, and behind-the-scenes work goes into something this size, long before a single film ever screens.
When the Festival rolls around on January 21st, an estimated 85,000 attendees are expected over the course of 10 days, and a lot of new folks will get to experience the charm of downtown Boulder. That's a lot of new eyes on our shops, restaurants, and events that make the community what it is. If you're looking for tips or information, we've got you covered: Sundance Film Festival in Downtown Boulder. This page covers everything from festival dates and venues to places to stay!
If I had to personally recommend downtown spots, I'd send visitors to Illegal Pete’s for a burrito bowl (my favorite after leaving the Boulder Theater) or Gemini for a drink and conversation after a screening! But that’s just the start of it… check out our pages for places to explore for more ideas on where to eat, shop and spend time in downtown Boulder.
There's something pretty unique about experiencing the Sundance Film Festival’s arrival in Boulder as a student. For a lot of us, this isn't just a film festival happening near campus, it's this surreal collision of worlds, where the streets we walk on our way to class or grab coffee downtown are suddenly filled with industry buzz, premieres, and people who've been dreaming about moments like this for years.
I've had so many conversations with friends and peers lately, all buzzing with the same mix of excitement and disbelief - trying to figure out which panels to attend or just talking about what it means to have something this big land in our backyard while we're still figuring out our own paths.
Working alongside the Downtown Boulder Partnership through this internship has given me an even closer look at how much that excitement is shaping the town itself, and it's made me appreciate how rare it is to be young and present for a moment like this, right where we live, learn, and work!
