Annual Student Banner Project Promoting Boulder Arts Week amplifies Student Voices

Student artists from Columbine Elementary, Casey Middle, and Boulder High School showcase their creativity around How We See Community-themed banners on Pearl Street Mall lamp poles.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Boulder, Colorado [February 22, 2021] – The Pearl Street Mall is brimming with even more innovative art thanks to the creative work of 42 talented artists from Columbine Elementary, Casey Middle School and Boulder High School.

Adding their voices to the recent installation -  Our Wishes | Nuestros Deseos flags (created by the creative duo Abadâ—®Anaya with community input) on Pearl Street Mall’s 1300 block - the ninth annual Student Banner program explores the theme: How We See Community. Students were asked to reflect on the resilience of our Boulder community. Their responses are displayed now through April on the Mall’s 42 new lamp pole banners. The students showcased their creativity using mediums ranging from digital art and collage to pencil art and watercolors - all of which were scanned and printed onto the banners that adorn the four blocks of the pedestrian mall.

“Students’ reflections on our community’s strength in light of this extraordinarily challenging time are incredibly inspirational,” said Anna Salim, Downtown Boulder Partnership’s VP of Events and Membership. “We were thrilled that the timing worked out to present their views alongside the wishes and hopes of our community captured by Abadâ—®Anaya through Our Wishes | Nuestros Deseos.”

“We hope the community will come out, enjoy and be inspired by all of the artwork that is on display along Pearl Street Mall right now,” said Chip, Downtown Boulder Partnership’s CEO. “Until large, in-person gatherings are safe again, these temporary public art installations are a wonderful way to bring us together in spirit.”

The public will be invited to vote for their favorite Student Banner (“People’s Choice” award) during Boulder Arts Week, March 26 - April 3, 2021 online at BoulderDowntown.com/Banners. The winning artist (based on number of votes received) will receive a $100 Downtown Boulder Gift Card.

A photo gallery of the banners is featured on the Downtown Boulder website: BoulderDowntown.com/Banners, as well as a map identifying the location of each banner.

The ninth annual Student Banner Project is produced by the Downtown Boulder Foundation, presented by Boulder Arts Week and sponsored by ANB Bank and GrafXGroup.
