Beyond the Big Screen: Discovering Downtown Boulder's Creative Side

Tag: Boulder

Hey Downtown,

As a big name in the arts and entertainment world makes its way to Boulder with the arrival of the 2027 Sundance Film Festival, it's exciting to remember just how much of an arts community Boulder already has firmly established. With so many local artists, creative spaces and independent businesses throughout downtown, there's plenty to appreciate as we embrace the creative energy leading up to January.

As art practice has become a part of my studies at CU Boulder, I've come to appreciate what it takes to create something meaningful that can connect people. Art has a way of telling stories, sharing perspectives and bringing people together. With the 2027 Sundance Film Festival approaching, I wanted to explore some of the creative spaces that make downtown Boulder so special.

You don't have to look far to find art around Pearl Street. The Downtown Boulder Alley Gallery turns everyday alleyways into colorful displays featuring 30 painted doors by local artists. You can also follow the Downtown Boulder Mural Tour to discover public artwork tucked throughout downtown. It's a fun reminder that sometimes the best art is found when you slow down and look around.

If you're feeling inspired to make something yourself, there are plenty of places downtown to get creative. Stop by Colorado Glass Works to explore stained-glass artwork or try a class, or head to Color Me Mine to paint your own pottery piece. You can also check out Stryker Studio for a hands on jewelry making experience! Two Hands Paperie is another favorite of mine. I remember finding paper and pens there for scrapbooking when I was first starting my own artist journey!

For those who prefer admiring art, downtown Boulder has plenty of galleries worth exploring. Visit the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art or Rembrandt Yard to discover local artists and rotating exhibitions, or browse the collection at SmithKlein Gallery, a downtown staple for more than 30 years. You can also stop by Ana’s Art Gallery, 15th Street Gallery, Artie Sandstone’s Gallery and The New Local for even more local creativity and unique pieces. A lifelong goal of mine is to have a home filled with art collected from places that hold special meaning to me. I'm lucky to call Boulder home, where creativity and self-expression are such a big part of the community.

Beyond individual galleries and shops, Boulder has a long history of celebrating the arts. The Pearl Street Arts Fest returns July 16–18, 2027, for its 50th year, bringing artists and creative work from across the country to downtown. And don’t forget long-time Boulder favorite, the Boulder International Film Festival (BIFF to locals) will make its triumphant return April 8-11, 2027.

Boulder’s creative scene doesn't stop there. Catch live music year-round at Boulder Theater, eTown, Stone Cottage Studios and Velvet Elk. Don't miss seasonal favorites like Bands on the Bricks and the Tulugi Music Festival, either!

As the 2027 Sundance Film Festival approaches, it's exciting to remember that creativity has always been part of what makes Boulder special. Whether you're discovering a new mural, browsing a gallery or trying a creative class, there's so much to experience alongside the big screen.  Learn more about the 2027 Sundance Film festival.
