Summer Solstice

Category: Boulder Blog

Hi downtown,

It’s crazy to think we’re already almost through the first month of summer! The days are getting longer and nights are getting shorter, which means that the summer solstice is approaching. This Friday, June 20th, the sun reaches the highest point in the sky, making it the longest day of the year for the Northern Hemisphere. So with that, I thought it would be a great time to give you ideas on how to spend the longest day of the year in downtown Boulder.

Historically, in ancient civilizations, people would connect with the solstice through practices such as yoga and meditation, which is why the International Day of Yoga is on June 21st. While this year the summer solstice is on the 20th, I still recommend starting your day off with some physical and mental well-being. Spots downtown to check out include Yoga Pearl and ONE Boulder Fitness. (Side note: prAna offers FREE yoga classes throughout the month as well.)  Looking to beat the heat? I’d head up Mount Sanitas early in the morning, where to enjoy a three-mile loop along with a breathtaking view of Boulder and the mountains to the north and west. (The Centennial Trailhead on Sunshine Canyon Drive is walking distance from downtown.)

After an eventful morning, grab some breakfast/brunch or a cup of coffee from one of our ample options downtown. I’m excited to try Amante Coffee for the first time. Their northern Italian coffee roasts sound perfect for me. Or, head to Ozo Coffee, located on both the West and East Ends of downtown.

After breakfast/brunch, take a guided stroll through Boulder’s colorful past with Banjo Billy’s Historic Walking Tour. Presented by the Museum of Boulder, these 90-minute walking tours bring life to fascinating stories and legends of downtown Boulder. After that, explore the diverse shops downtown has to offer, and plan out your afternoon happy hour. If you’ve never been, check out Jungle: an island-inspired tropical paradise where the drinks are truly unique and vibrant. I don’t know about you, but when I think of the summer solstice, I also think $6 Strawberry Daiquiris!

While the longest day of the year will come to an end, downtown nightlife won’t. From 8 pm to 11 pm, Bear Hat with Mighty Holler is coming to the Velvet Elk Lounge. Enjoy a bit of original material and fun covers by both musical groups. To add to this night full of music and celebration, The English Beat is playing live at the Boulder Theater from 8 pm - 12 am. As they say, “You can’t stop the English Beat,” so go check out their energetic mix of musical styles and sound.

Downtown, as always, have a great week and make sure to spend the longest day of the year outside and immersed in the beauty of the day!

Till next time,
Wylie
