Melinda Rosenberg paints, cuts, and “folds” found wood to create abstract wall installations that intersect painting and sculpture. The artist’s process begins with collecting scraps of wood found in old barns and lumber yards throughout rural Ohio. Rosenberg then repurposes and alters the wood by painting directly on its surface before sanding, cutting, and adjoining the various pieces together. The result is an origami-like construction where divergent pieces of wood meet in an unexpected, yet harmonious balance. By seamlessly intertwining each reconstructed piece of wood, the artist creates a multi-planed surface that projects off the wall. Collectively, Rosenberg’s formal geometries explore concepts of nature, architecture, and color. Her works bring into focus how the wood grain holds memory of time and evidence of growth and decay. She reimagines the found raw material by incorporating subtle optical illusions that challenges the viewer’s sense of perception, creating pause and the space to witness what is really there.

About the Artist
Melinda Rosenberg has exhibited her work extensively and is represented by Sherrie Gallery in Columbus, OH and Haen Gallery in Asheville and Brevard, NC. Her work is in the collection of Hilton Hotels; The Franklin County Convention Facilities Authority; the James Cancer Hospital; University of Toledo; Richard M. Ross Art Museum at Ohio Wesleyan University; Rush Presbyterian Hospital, Chicago, IL; and many others. She has been awarded numerous Individual Artist Grants from the Ohio Arts Council and was selected by the Greater Columbus Arts Council for an artist residency in Dresden, Germany. Rosenberg lives in Worthington, OH. She received her BAE and MFA from The Ohio State University and studied Chinese Language at Fu Jen University in Taipei, Taiwan.
