DBI excited to take the helm of one of Boulder’s most well-known running events

[Boulder, CO]  May 31, 2013 The Downtown Boulder Race Series is back with a vengeance in 2013.   Under the new direction of Downtown Boulder, Inc. (DBI), this long standing tradition now in its 16th year welcomes members of Boulder’s elite running community, as well as running (and walking) enthusiasts of all ages and abilities.  Each race highlights a specific area of one of the most scenic downtown districts in America with competitive, non-competitive and kids’ waves.

The race series has become a summertime ritual in Boulder. “We are very excited to be producing this year’s series,” said Sean Maher, executive director of DBI.  “Since all three races happen downtown, it was a natural fit when DBI was given the opportunity to take it over. Each race highlights a very distinct section of our district. Both runners and spectators will enjoy this family-friendly series.”

Similar to years’ past, each of the three races:  West End 3K, Pearl Street Mile and East End 2K include kids’ waves equal to one-half the distance of the adult races.  Prizes will be awarded at each event, as well as for the series, to the overall top male and female competitors; top masters finishers; and top age group finishers.  All kids will receive a commemorative finishers ribbon.

The first race in the series is the West End 3K which will take place on Wednesday, June 5 at 6 p.m. starting at 10th and Pearl streets.  Hazel Miller will perform the National Anthem and Boulder running legend Frank Shorter will emcee.  Next up is the Pearl Street Mile – the series’ signature event.  New this year to the Pearl Street Mile is the downtown business wave that will kick off the event at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10.   After finishing, participants and spectators are invited to celebrate at Bands on the Bricks with a special performance by That Eighties Band.   The East End 2K will wrap up this year’s series on Saturday, August 10 at 8 a.m. – a perfect way for families to conclude the summer race season.

“There are a few notable changes to this year’s series,” said Anna Salim, DBI event director.   “This year, we are kicking things off in June and will be ending by early August.    Since summer is the height of tourist season, this new schedule will accommodate locals and visitors alike, not to mention restaurants and shops that line each course as well as throughout downtown.  We are also very excited about the Pearl Street Mile’s downtown business wave.  There is a great spirit of friendly competition throughout downtown and bragging rights are on the line.”

Registration for the Downtown Boulder Race Series is now open at DowntownBoulderRaces.com.    Those who register by June 4, 2013 will receive a discounted price for the series of $50/adults and $40/children (ages 2 – 11).   Individual registration for each race is also available.   Pre-registration is strongly encouraged; however, race day registration is also available at a slightly higher entrance fee.   More information can be found online at DowntownBoulderRaces.com.

This year, the Race Series will be a collection point for One World Running.  This all-volunteer organization distributes shoes and running clothes to needy athletes and children around the world.

The Downtown Boulder Race Series is produced by DBI and sponsored by Newton Running, Daily Camera, Athleta, City of Boulder Parking Services, Fleet Feet, Boulder Running Company and Eldorado Natural Spring Water.
