Downtown Boulder Prepares for an Influx of Fairies and Elves Just In Time for Tulip Season

Category: Press Room

One of Downtown Boulder’s most beloved springtime events, the Tulip Fairy and Elf Festival, set to take place on Sunday, April 8th on the Pearl Street Mall

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

[Boulder, CO]  March 29, 2018  –   In the late 70s, Boulder’s then sister city, Meppel, Holland would send 5,000 tulip bulbs annually to be planted along the Pearl Street Mall.  A form of this tradition continues to this day when every fall the City of Boulder’s Parks Department plants 15,000 brand new tulip bulbs that are directly imported from Holland.   With a little TLC over the winter months, the tulips start to peek out of the ground sometime between late March and April.

Every year to “welcome” the tulips, the Downtown Boulder Partnership throws a springtime celebration.  This year’s Tulip Fairy & Elf Festival will happen on Sunday, April 8 (with a rain date scheduled for April 15).  Downtown Boulder’s one-and-only, official Tulip Fairy, along with a few hundred pint-sized fairy & elves plus a handful of cowboys, super heroes and characters (left over from Halloween costumes) will celebrate the arrival of spring and the beloved tulips in bloom on the Pearl Street Mall’s 1300 block.

The family festival begins April 8 at 1 p.m. (ending at 5 p.m.) on the 1300 block of the mall.  Children will enjoy live entertainment on the main stage in front of the County Courthouse.  Performance Schedule:
1:00 - 1:45 p.m.:  Taylor Shae
2:00 - 2:45 p.m.: Teresa Storch and the Sharp Eleven
3:00 - 3:45 p.m.: Chloe of Intuit - Conscious Music for Kids
4:00 - 5:00 p.m.: Jeff & Paige - Waking the Bear

Between each performance at 1:45, 2:45 and 3:45, the Tulip Fairy will meet children in front of the performance stage and ask for their assistance to help wake the tulips and welcome spring to downtown Boulder!

This year’s festival also features over 20 local community groups who will offer children & their families’ complimentary activities and/or treats including dress up tea parties, foam sword dueling, coloring and more.  Look for the Tulip Fairy & Elf Festival selfie photo booth station on the courthouse lawn as well. The Tulip Fairy & Elf Festival is a free event and costumes are encouraged. The public can learn more at TulipFairyFestival.com.  Details about the rain date will be updated on the website by 9 a.m. on April 8 if needed.

Reminders: Every Saturday and Sunday, City of Boulder parking garages are free. Details at BoulderParking.com.  Please leave furry family members at home!

The Tulip Fairy and Elf Festival is produced by the Downtown Boulder Partnership and supported by Premier Members Credit Union, City of Boulder Parking & Access, Daily Camera and Eldorado Natural Spring Water.

(This year, the tulips are expected to be at their finest over the next two to three weeks.   At this time, it appears that with a little help from Mother Nature the 1300 block will be blooming just a little later!)
