I don’t know about you, but I happen to know a handful of people with birthdays at the end of August and early September. My sister just had her birthday, and she is coming to visit me this weekend from Dallas, so I plan on having a mini belated birthday celebration for her! In order to make this super special I want to get her a small cake, and because downtown Boulder is filled with so many great bakeries and sweet shops I am confident I can find just the right one!
I need a gluten-free cake, as my sister has a gluten allergy. Luckily, the downtown district is filled with places accommodating to people with food allergies and sensitivities. The first place I am going to consider is T & Cakes on 14th Street. They pride themselves on making seasonal and daily cupcakes while also catering cakes for special events. On their website, I found a variety of gluten-free/vegan and gluten-free/non-vegan cakes and cupcakes. Some flavors include: Chocolate Birthday, Lemon Lavender, and Maple Bacon. (Note: they require 72 hours to place a specialty order.)
Another option is Ben & Jerry's ice-cream cakes, which my sister loves and so do I. On Ben & Jerry’s website they offer three cake shapes, lots of design decoration options, and all of their ice-cream flavors. They use a combo of two ice-creams for their cakes. A popular combo is their Cherry Garcia flavor with Chocolate Fudge Brownie. This sounds great because Ben & Jerry’s cakes are completely customizable, and they have a wide selection of gluten-free ice-cream. Ben & Jerry’s cakes can also be ordered straight from their website and if you have a “cake emergency” you can place a same-day order by calling!
A third option I am going to look at for a delicious gluten-free cake is Spruce Confections. I know Spruce Confections from all of their tasty pastries sprinkled around Boulder in coffee shops like The Laughing Goat. I have had their gluten-free cinnamon coffee cake on occasion, (which by the way you would never guess is gluten-free) and it always hits the spot! Their website shows many size options for ordering cakes and they offer a Gluten-Free Chocolate Cake as well as a Gluten-Free Mocha Chocolate Chip Cake. Their cake options are ideal for me as I am looking for a small cake. They offer lots of in-store ready-made options for cakes too.
Now that I know the options out there I am going to go out into the downtown district and do some in person taste testing. I am thinking I’ll need to check out the place myself…because I only want the best for my sister! (wink wink)
Wish me luck on my cake hunt!
Best,
Intern Alicia
