Art Source International

Kate and father in store

Katie Olson has the unique experience of working in the same store for her entire life. It all began in the 1970s when her father, George Karakehian, began collecting a few antique maps and prints. He started to sell them casually - then he began to notice a booming market for this type of collector product. So in 1979, he opened Art Source International on the Pearl Street Mall. The rest is antique map history.

“When Art Source International first began, it was a fine art gallery specifically focused on maps and prints. Fast forward 42 years, and we now sell thousands of different types of art and puzzles,” said Katie. “There are only a handful of antique galleries left in the country, and we are honored to be among the largest with only room to grow.”

Katie officially began working for the business, located in a historic 112 year-old building, in 2009. However, she grew up inside the store. “Being part of a second-generation business and working with my dad is really special. We learn from each other and can mesh old and new styles. I am so proud of what we have done over the past several years.”

Not only does Katie enjoy working with her father, but she values being part of the downtown Boulder business community. “I love small businesses. I love working with other small businesses downtown. I love the hustle that small business owners have and the common struggles we share. The small business community here is amazing. The creativity, drive and passion of downtown Boulder is really energizing.”

The vibrance of downtown first drew George onto Pearl Street when the Mall was in its infancy, and now Katie cannot imagine being anywhere else. “We are in the heart of Boulder. Downtown is a destination for world travelers and local visitors alike, allowing people from all over the world to see our gallery. There is no place we would rather be.”

To support this father-daughter business, come into the store or shop online. “We want to see your faces! Our gallery is a great place to find gifts. Our offerings cover such a large range of art and styles, there is truly something special for everyone. And if you are a local, rediscover the magic of downtown and support small businesses.”

Not many people have the opportunity to grow up in the business they will eventually manage, but Katie wouldn’t have it any other way. “Working with my dad has been an incredible gift. There is no better store and community to be part of.” Follow Art Source International on social media (@artsourceboulder) and stop by to see the dynamic father-daughter duo in action.
