Creature Comforts Cafe

Ever since Jess Liu was a little girl, she dreamed of creating a hospitality space. During her time in college, Jess grew to love the explorative nature and spatial interactions that came with ‘cafe culture’, noting, “Exploring new cafes and coffee shops is my favorite way to explore a new city.”

The city of Boulder quickly turned into home for Jess and her husband when they moved to the area in 2018. “I really love the fullness of life and the diverse, active lifestyles that come with it.” Whether it's mountain biking, hiking the foothills or admiring the Flatirons, Jess’s personal happiness comes from being outdoors. After moving to Boulder and establishing a family, Jess knew it was the right time to revisit her love of cafes and downtown Boulder was her dream location to open shop. “I felt as if I was ready to act on my dream of opening my own business and was excited to create a space within the downtown Boulder community.”

Jess opened Creature Comforts Cafe in July 2023 on the vibrant East End. The cafe reflects the uniqueness of its name - inviting positive energy with thoughtful design. The space is brightened with hints of forest greens (Jess’s favorite color), plant decor and local art. “I always wanted my cafe to be cozy and inviting to others. One night the name just came to me, and I believe the name reflects the playfulness of the space itself”.

Jess admires the merge of both locals and tourists that fill the downtown scene. She prioritizes the comfort of her guests and their interactions within the space through  a wide selection of offerings such as coffee, tea, wine, beer and treats, Interactions within the space can happen in a multitude of ways, whether it be meet and greets, dates, working, knitting, reading - that is what makes her idea of cafe culture so special.

Creature Comforts Cafe is a tip-free shop. “I always tell guests that the best way to support our local businesses is to just keep coming back and telling friends about us.”

“Everyone here has been very welcoming and the hard work has been very rewarding.” When it comes to running a small business, there are always going to be high highs and low lows. At the end of the day, “I believe I am doing what I am meant to be doing.”

Jess continues to pour her heart into her business that she has been dreaming of since she was a little girl. Make sure to stop by this amazing locally owned and woman owned business and enjoy all of the comforts of a cozy community space!
