Category: Press Room

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Downtown Boulder’s one and only Tulip Fairy ushers in spring on Sunday, April 3 at the Annual Tulip Fairy and Elf Festival

[Boulder, CO]  March 16, 2016 –   Nothing says “Spring” like Downtown Boulder, Inc.’s annual Tulip Fairy and Elf Festival.  This year, the event will be held on April 3, 2016 with a rain date of April 10, 2016.   Each year pint sized fairies and elves head to the Pearl Street Mall to join the Tulip Fairy and welcome Spring with an afternoon of live stage performances and creative activities hosted by community businesses and organizations.

The Tulip Fairy leads a mini parade around the Mall ‘waking up’ the tulips that adorn the flower beds thanks to the efforts of the City of Boulder Parks Department.  The festival begins at 1 p.m. (ending at 5 p.m.) on the 1200, 1300 & 1400 blocks of the mall.  Participants will enjoy live entertainment on the main stage in front of the County Courthouse.  The live performance schedule is as follows:

1:00 pm - 1:45 pm  "Waking the Bear"

2:15 pm - 3:00 pm  Wandering Natives

3:30 pm - 4:00 pm  Tulip Fairy Parade

4:00 pm - 5:00 pm  Boulder School of Rock

Twenty local community groups and businesses will provide children with a variety of activities (e.g. foam sword dueling; collaborative art projects; nature activities and wildlife safety; seed planting; compost worm exploration; cookie decorating).   There will also be face painting (minimal charge) and plenty of free photo ops with the Tulip Fairy herself.

The Tulip Fairy & Elf Festival is a free event and costumes are encouraged. The public can learn more at TulipFairyFestival.com.  (Every Saturday and Sunday, City of Boulder parking garages are free. BoulderParking.com.)

History of the Pearl Street Mall Tulips:

In the late 70s, Boulder’s then sister city, Meppel, Holland would send 5,000 tulip bulbs annually to be planted along the Pearl Street Mall.  A form of this tradition continues to this day when every fall the City of Boulder’s Parks Department plants 15,000 brand new tulip bulbs that are directly imported from Holland.   With a little TLC over the winter months, the tulips start to peek out of the ground sometime between late March and April.

The Tulip Fairy and Elf Festival is supported by Broadway Suites, the Daily Camera, City of Boulder Parking Services, Eldorado Natural Spring Water and produced by Downtown Boulder, Inc.
