Bolder Colours

James Hollier has lots of experience with management. With a background in accounting and business administration, he has successfully worked for both Fortune 100 companies and small businesses in management and CFO roles. So when it came time to retire, he knew he wanted something to keep him busy. He figured buying a small business would do the trick - so long as he had a good manager to tackle day-to-day tasks. After looking for opportunities in Denver, James didn’t find the right fit, so he expanded his search into Boulder, and that is when he stumbled upon Paul Morrison Colours.

An established Boulder hair salon since the 1990s, Paul Morrison Colours was for sale just north of the Pearl Street Mall on 15th Street. James fell in love with the location, and with no prior hair salon experience, he bought the company in early March 2020, renaming it Bolder Colours. Two weeks later, the pandemic hit.

“Owning a hair salon is quite different from anything I’ve ever done before but I’m adapting. Taking over the business right during COVID was certainly an unexpected challenge but we have adapted to that too,” said James.

Bolder Colours is a well-established and respected salon offering services from cutting and styling to balayage, highlights, hair & scalp treatments and more. “Our business is all about taking care of clients. Our goal is to create confidence in everyone that walks through the door - we want each customer to feel beautiful. My favorite aspect of the business is getting to meet so many people. I love to hear stories and get to know people from all walks of life.”

Prior to buying this business, James was not familiar with the Boulder area. “Since owning the store, I have come to really love Boulder. I like that it’s a smaller, community centric-feeling city. Our clients are wonderful, with a different outlook and attitude on what life is and should be about. Being a downtown business has made me appreciate the lifestyle of Boulderites.”

James is a big community advocate. “To support us, support other downtown businesses. The more development and opportunity that exists in Boulder, the better Bolder Colours will be.”

Follow Bolder Colours on social media (@boldercolours) and stop by the next time you need a haircut. James will be there, ready to chat and hear all your best stories but don’t worry, he’ll leave the cut, color and styling to his incredibly talented team.
